Card counting in blackjack

Counting cards is pretty easy, but it can take time to master. It can seem daunting because most people think card counting has to do with memorisation. Luckily for those of us who can barely remember what we had for breakfast, never mind the placement of each card in a 52-card deck, you don’t have to memorise every card. It’s more about using a simple system to keep track of the ratio of low cards to high cards.

Counting cards can be broken into four steps:

  • Step 1. Assign a value to every card.
  • Step 2. Keep a running count based off of the values of the card dealt.
  • Step 3. Use this information to calculate the count per deck or ‘true count’.
  • Step 4. Change your bets as the true count rises.

There are several popular methods of card counting, namely the High Opt 1; the Running Count; the True Count; the Ace Side Count; and Bet Spreads in blackjack.

It’s up to you to figure out which method works for you, and then practise until you’re a blackjack pro!
