Gambling in Nevada History

Nevada is located on the Great Basin Desert; the territory was acquired by the US at the end of the Mexican War in 1848. During this time, a few settlers chose to live in Nevada. In 1859, a number of settlers were attracted to the area after the discovery the Comstock Lode of gold and silver. They exploited the area’s mining opportunities. In 1864, during the Civil War, Nevada became the 36th state to strengthen the union.

At the beginning of the Great Depression, the mines of Nevada started to decline, and the economy was falling apart. In March 1931 the state’s legislature took a stance in response to the population’s plight. They took the measure to legalize gambling.

Within the first few decades of legalizing gambling in Nevada, the crime rate flourished. However, Nevada has become the gambling and entertainment capital of the world. It is home to the world’s most famous casinos, night clubs, and sporting events. Today, the gambling taxes of the state account for the lion’s share of the state’s overall tax revenues.
